We recently updated our Microsoft Word (DOCX) export. Please see below how it works.

1. The central topic becomes the title of the exported document and will appear at the top with a bigger font size. Your main topics and subtopics will be listed in a headings hierarchy up until the 4th level. After the 4th level, all the subtopics will be listed as normal text with indentation.
Notes are exported exactly as they are in the mind map (keeping their stylings such as bulleting, numbering, font size, and color).

2. Comments will appear on the right side of the document, in a column, each comment connected to its topic with a dotted line. The comments will also display the initials of the person who added it and the date it was added.

Task Mind Maps will have their task specifications (start date/end date, priority, duration and assignee) exported as a table right under the task’s title:

3. The new export will enable you to create a table of contents. This is very useful if you are writing an essay, article or book, and you want yourself and/or your readers to be able to navigate easily through the document. You can read more here on how to create such a table of contents.

Please give this new functionality a try and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Keep it smart, simple and creative!

  1. I was excited to find the Word export discussed to help implement projects and avoid re-typing but I can only find pdf and png export options on the android app now…

How can I access the function?

    • Hi Michael, thank you for your message. We’ve provided a more detailed response via email. If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to us anytime.

  2. Thanks for the improvements in Microsoft Word exports. It’s getting close to becoming the main tool that I use from start to finish. I like that you are now using style headings but am finding that I have to do some editing of these to make them fit my needs. I have three suggestions:

    1. Allow the user to select how many levels to export as headings. I typically find I want three levels rather than four but this can depend on the content.

    2. Provide the option to create images of the mindmap that are inserted in the document. I like to be able to add an view of the whole map at the start of the document and each of the first level branches under each of the first level heading.

    3. If possible I’d like to be able to select a document template that Mindomo will use when generating the .docx. Templates could be imported as documents and perhaps even linked to custom themes so that the mind map and the document output share a consistent style.

    Thanks for your great work.

    • Hello Andrew,
and thank you for your suggestions. We have added them to our list and we will pay close attention to see if they are endorsed by other users.
If so, we might consider implementing them. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any assistance, we will gladly help.

  3. Unfortunately, this has made it a lot more arduous process now, since i have to go in and modify all the styles once I get it in Word, because Word’s default styles are meant for headings, not really sub-items, which is the way a mind map looks at it. Is there a way to just get a plain-text word file with indentation instead of translating levels to headings? Also, bold and italics don’t make it into the word doc. Seems like a big oversight.

    • Hi Sam and thank you for the feedback. This Word export formatting was specifically requested by many users along the way. We’ll add your suggestion on the list and pay attention to see whether the great majority of our users would prefer the functionality with or without the current formatting. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for any further assistance, we will gladly help.
